![]() Possibly another editor or user has greater insight into this morass. I don't think that any of these issues contain performances that are not in the 5 LP master set.īefore doing anything more, however, I wanted to put this out for discussion. I would leave the Songbooks with the non-Buffet artwork, showing performances as "also released" on these, as appropriate. I am inclined to believe that the 5 LP set was released earliest, and I am inclined to put it into the database, eliminating the individual entries we currently show using the Buffet artwork, although this might not be appropriate if the LPs in the master set were really issued individually. As best as I can determine, both of these LPs were also released in 1959, but I'm not 100% sure of that. 1 with that catalog number which is similar to, but not identical with, MGVS 7000. 1, which at one point was designated MGVS 6077. For instance we are currently showing the MGVS 7000 version of Vol. To make matters more messed up, it appears that there were at least two individually issued volume ones, with similar - but not identical - track listings. To further confuse matters, there appear to have been at least two individually released LPs, using the name "George and Ira Gershwin" songbook, with volume numbers 1 and 2 and different artwork (not the Buffet lithgraphs). Moreover, except for Discogs, which uses at least for the "V6" issue of volume 1 a 1959 release date, I have found no information about the year(s) of the V6 issues. In addition, there are apparently stereo releases of the records (reflected with a "V6" prefix by Verve), see, for instance, …, but what appears to be a comprehensive on-line Ella Fitzgerald discography does not show any "V6" issues, (, nor does the Lord "Jazz Discography". If you look at the Buffet lithographs, they do not mention Ella Fitzgerald or the Gershwins on their fronts, and it strikes me as unlikely that individual LPs would be released that way. I am skeptical that the LPs were ever released individually with this artwork. Both SHS and Discogs are showing some individual releases with the Buffet artwork. It is unclear to me if the individual records were also released singularly and, if so, whether at the same time as the set. This package apparently included lithographs by Bernard Buffet, which I think, but do not know, were used as sleeves for the records in the set. It appears that a 5 LP box set was issued with the title "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook" (or maybe "Songbooks") in 1959. ![]() I have just spent the last couple of hours trying to figure out how Fitzgerald's Gershwin Songbooks should be presented in the database, but for the time being I am defeated, and I welcome any input. ![]()
